Tree Risk Assessment
An objective-based risk assessment is often desired in various scenarios. A tree risk assessment is conducted to evaluate the likelihood of branch or whole-tree failure and determine if a tree poses an immediate threat to people or property. Tree risk assessment programs consist of three levels:
Level 1 - Limited Visual Assessments - These are quick, visual-only assessments that are primarily used to identify trees within a population that require a more extensive assessment to determine the likelihood of failure. Level 1 assessments are recommended for larger properties with many trees and will identify which trees require further attention.
Level 2 - Basic Assessments - During a Level 2 assessment, the Arborist walks completely around the tree while carefully identifying defects and known species issues. These assessments may involve the use of sounding mallets, probes, and binoculars to gather additional information to provide an accurate risk rating or determine if a more detailed assessment is necessary.

The arborist may use climbing techniques, sonic tomography, root excavation, or resistograph drilling to gather relevant information. These assessments are the most costly due to the required skill level, high cost of instruments, and time taken to perform the assessment.
